Welcome back to more news from the CMSE department and college! This newsletter will share the events and opportunities in the department. Some of these events are highlighted in the GSO Event Calendar Invite List that you can join, or on our website!

Updates & Upcoming Events:

• COGS wants to hear about how your research can impact Michigan, the United States, and/or the world! We want to escalate student research to the University Office of Federal Affairs in their discussions on capitol hill for funding at MSU. Reach out to Ian Freeman ([email protected]) with a quick blurb about your research and how it can impact Michigan, the US, or the World!
• AIDMM-NRT is hosting the National Labs Career Panel again this year on Oct 6th (TODAY), 4-5pm at CMSE conference room 1502. Join to communicate directly with the national lab scientists and learn the new career trend at National labs. See your email for more details!
• Check out the events MSU’s graduate school is hosting this week. Workshops, write-ins, and community meetings are an easy way to get involved!
• AIDMM-NRT is hosting the hot topic short courses this semester on “Can AI facilitate your research?” in the coming weeks. Learn how people are using AI to enhance research productivity, improve coding, and workflow. Everyone curious about AI as a research booster is welcome to join. See your email for more details!
• The MSU football season is well underway, and if you enjoy tailgating, please see more information in the #tailgates channel on Slack. Note that these tailgates are not CMSE-sponsored, but CMSE people and friends are welcome to join!
• MSU’s Data Science & AI Summit will be held on Wednesday, October 15th. See more information at the link and register before spots run out!
• Interested in Riverbank Restoration & Clean-up? Consider attending MSU’s Beal Botanical Garden Walking Tour Series for their event on October 22nd, hosted by Carolyn Miller. Sign up at this link.

Fellowships that are accepting applications this fall semester: DOD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG), Hertz Foundation fellowship, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Program.

💡GSO: Community Projects! We selected two community projects for the fall semester. The effort and initiative of the students volunteering to take on these projects is greatly appreciated!

Professional Development (PD) Book Club: Trying to effectively balance the speed of completing your PhD, as well as being marketable in the workforce after defending? The PD Book Club has chosen between two FREE reading options to mitigate these concerns: How to Tame Your PhD by Inger Newburn and Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day: A Guide to Starting, Revising, and Finishing Your Doctoral Thesis by Joan Bolker. Join the #pd_book-club channel on Slack to read about these important strategies with your fellow students!

Graduate Student Wellness Center: Graduate school can be financially stressful, and often, a small gesture can make a big difference. The wellness center is a space for everyone to use, share, and support one another as part of our community. If you want or need personal hygiene or household items, you are welcome to take whatever you want, at no cost. In addition, you can contribute to the wellness center by donating items that you can, making this a community project in helping each other.
