Good afternoon!

Welcome back to more news from the CMSE department and college! This newsletter will share the events and opportunities in the department. Some of these events are highlighted in the GSO Event Calendar Invite List that you can join, or on our website!

Updates & Upcoming Events:

Constant Resources: Scroll down for more information on items that are continually in the newsletter!

💡GSO: Community Projects! We selected three community projects for the fall semester. The effort and initiative of the students volunteering to take on these projects is greatly appreciated!

Professional Development (PD) Book Club: Trying to effectively balance the speed of completing your PhD, as well as being marketable in the workforce after defending? The PD Book Club has chosen between two FREE reading options to mitigate these concerns: How to Tame Your PhD by Inger Newburn and Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day: A Guide to Starting, Revising, and Finishing Your Doctoral Thesis by Joan Bolker. Join the #pd_book-club channel on Slack to read about these important strategies with your fellow students!

Graduate Student Wellness Center: Graduate school can be financially stressful, and often, a small gesture can make a big difference. The wellness center is a space for everyone to use, share, and support one another as part of our community. If you want or need personal hygiene or household items, you are welcome to take whatever you want, at no cost. In addition, you can contribute to the wellness center by donating items that you can, making this a community project in helping each other. Check out these resources and more in 1515 near the Hot Desks!

CMSE Community Writing Sessions: Do you have experience writing formal or academic documents such as personal statements, scientific articles, or perhaps even theses? Even if you don’t, you probably know how difficult it is to write persuasively; we’ve all struggled to start a sentence or finish a paragraph. Yet, many of us in STEM have had few opportunities to familiarize ourselves with the elements of grammar and style—this is particularly true for members of our community whose first language isn’t English! For this reason, we invite graduate students and postdocs in our department to participate in a new event series—the CMSE Community Writing Sessions— three day-long writing sessions scheduled for the remainder of Fall 2025. Company, coffee, and refreshments will be provided during each session!
